I work at the dining room table and in the morning there is a half hour period where the light coming through the glass doors is just blinding. As soon as the leaves all fall off the trees it is only going to get worse.
The way the room is situated (when I am sitting at the table) there is a big window behind me and the glass doors to the left of me. I have sheer curtains on the window that go all the way to the floor but nothing on the glass doors. I think I originally put the curtains up to see if I liked them before committing to do the entire room in them. Then, as I am wont to do, just never got around to finishing it.
I'll never match the curtains now so I decided to just move them from window to the doors. They are sheer but they should cut the light enough. Plus our neighbors house is on that side and they can see right into the dining room so I'll get some privacy too.
I took them down and jiminy were they ever disgusting. They looked all innocent, hanging there, but they had accumulated about four years of dust. I hand washed them in the laundry room sink and let me tell you that water was grey. Ick. And they had that weird smell screens get. It's a perfect day for drying outside because it is quite breezy and sunny.
I also washed some unmentionables but I'll spare you that visual. I had a scary moment when a blouse blew off the line and Rick said that my undies were in the neighbors yard (he was kidding).

Those are really pretty!
I hear you on the years accumulation of dust-curtains are such a bother to take down and put back up that I tend to avoid it as long as possible.
Yay for you for getting that job done. It’s a biggie.

I love our sheer, very pretty. I do the same thing with more than curtains. I have an antique bird cage in my bathroom and the last time I took it down I got really sick…OH YUCK. I keep thinking I should do it again before it gets so bad but I figure it doesn’t have enough dust on it yet. A few more months won’t hurt right?

Hey there! My sister gave me a little embroidered piece that says: “Dust is a protective covering for furniture.” I’m a very neat housekeeper, but not all that clean – dusting – bah! I have to be embarrassed into doing it. Doesn’t that sound just awful? Anyway, I can relate to the curtain story and by the way…those are very pretty ones. I can imagine you sitting at your table with filtered light coming in….what a pretty sight!
And, oh…being a country type person…I love seeing your curtains moving in the breeze on that clothes line….you have a great weekend! Pat

The sheers look so pretty hanging on the line in the sun and the breeze. That dust smell is interesting, isn’t it? I had some old left-over curtain lace in a box that I got at a garage sale and knew I wanted to wash it before I used it. But when I washed the lace, it smelled awful, as if every bit of dust, cigarettes, whatever from the years was rising out of that sudsy water. I have discovered that some pieces aren’t keepers if I cannot get the smell out of them. My last resort is to do the Febreeze thing and if that doesn’t work, well I think twice but then sometimes I have to toss it.
