Under a Blue Moon

Decor, cooking, organization, all the pretty things

Never too late for this train

Bag

This morning when I woke up at 6:00am my son was still up.  He suffers from terrible insomnia but that's not what this post is about.  I asked him if I could make him some breakfast and he said bacon and eggs sounded really good.  So I hopped in my car and drove to our little local market.

While I was there I spied these great oil cloth bags.  I've been eyeing the 'green' bags that every grocery store has but they just didn't appeal to me asthetically.  I'll be the first to admit that if I'm going to be a good global citizen I'm going to be stylish doing it.

So I threw this one into my cart along with my bacon, orange juice (and Diet Coke which is the real reason I was at the store at 6:15 in the morning).

When I got to the check out the store manager rang me up and he handed the bag to the bagger.  I explained to him that I need to actually PURCHASE the bag before he started stuffing my groceries in it.

I actually am well ahead of the curve on this trend (and let's all hope it's not a trend – but a way of life) because I used to walk to the store with this bag all the time:

I like these bags because they have a little pocket sewn on one side that you can throw your wallet into.

They are a bit pricier than the bags the supermarket sells and honestly we just want to avoid putting more plastic and paper in the landfills so they don't have to be pretty.

But is sure makes me more apt to use them when they are.  This is the next one I want to get:

I've seen them in various stores and boutiques but here's the website if you're interested (the website prices are cheaper than I've seen in stores but you have to pay for shipping).  Another thing to note is that they are bigger than the average grocery store "green" shopper bag.  And they are very sturdy.  And very fun.

You always find the most amazing things. I love the shopping bags – there are about 5 of them on the website that I would love to have!

Those bags are adorable. I need to get on the ball and start using the canvas bags I own dozens of.

I have a Miso Pretty bag that I brought all the to Korea to use while we are living here. We have to pay for plastic bags at the grocery store. Although they do not cost much, it is a good incentive to bring your own bag.

That flower bag is just too cute! The rest are a treat too. I’m glad to see you are interested in using shopping bags. It’s the thing to do these days. With all that’s going on, I suppose we will be thinking of all kinds of ways to “help out.” Thanks for sharing. Pat

I’ve been eyeing those gorgeous shopping bags, too, but haven’t bought one yet. I got some of the ‘cheap’ generic bags but don’t use them much. I don’t like them, either. I think you gave me the idea why I don’t remember to use them. I would like something special. And pretty. Today will be my day to go get a nice bag. Or two. Or three. Once in awhile they have them on sale. If there’s a good sale I’ll stock up! Thanks for sharing your new bags with us. ~Adrienne~

I really need to do this and these bags are adorable! Have you had to wash them yet…I mean what if something spills inside and you can’t just wipe it out…? Don’t mind spending money on something that lasts….hate myself for buying things that fall apart…and okay – I am not the most graceful thing, especially since I have to haul my groceries all the way up to the second floor of the barn.

I did the exact same thing… I waited until I found bags I liked to carry. It might not have been the “greenest” mentality, but I got there. Thanks for the link for this site. I love them.

Love those bags. A supermarket chain in the UK has actually produced a set of very pretty “long life” shopping bags designed by Cath Kidston. I bought one but keep forgetting to use it, which kind of defeats the object!

Pretty bags. I have been collecting old pillowcases from the thrift store and yard sales with the intention of making shopping bags from them. But I haven’t done it yet. Everytime I come home with a trunk full of those plastic bags, I feel guilty.
