We’ve been having a bit of weather here in Northern California the past few days. I was sitting in my nice, cozy kitchen cutting out felt flowers when I noticed a movement and light out of the corner of my eye. I turned and looked out the window and a big oak tree was laying across our driveway.
It spared my car (by about a foot and a half) but it took out my green garden bench. At first it looked like the bench might be saved but when Rick was cutting the branches the trunk resting on the bench shifted and there it went.
We have a lot of big trees on our property and usually lose one each winter to a storm. This was closer to the house than I like. Why couldn’t it be one of the ugly, scrubby pine trees?
Since I was essentially trapped at home (car was blocked) I spent the day cheerfully cutting out felt flowers for my runner. I do love a project with a lot of hand work.
I don’t know what genius discovered that you could use freezer paper for tracing and cutting out but I would like to meet you and give you a big hug. You just trace out your design on the matte side and iron it to your fabric. The shiny side sticks to your fabric and you just cut out the design and then peel off the paper. And I discovered you can use the template more than once. After about the third time you iron it the paper loses it’s stick.
My flowers are all cut out and I need to go run over to Jo-Anns to see if they have light green wool felt and also pick up some embroidery floss. I need to cut out the leaves and then I can start assembling. I’m hoping to finish today or tomorrow.
Oh no. The wind got your yard. We looked out today & our gazebo canvas top was kind of messed up & our swing top ripped in half. That’s what we get for not putting our garden furniture away this year.
Oh my goodness – that was a close call to your call. Can that bench be repaired or is it to far gone? I’m glad that your house didn’t get hit.
Well that wool runner is just the cutest thing. I love love working with wool and you’ve got yourself a nice hand stitching project. I’m jealous because I need to get something ready for sitting by my comfy chair for some quiet times of stitching.

Hi Andrea – have been happily reading blogs this morning and started with Pamkittymorning and her post about visitors to the shop which sent me to your sister and to you…sorry to see the state of your yard, but lucky the house was spared..the wearther here in Australia is pretty random! We in the south are experiencing hot temps of around 40C and there are floods on the east coast…we are in severe drought here with water restrictions – but I digress….saw the cute table runner you are working on and have sent an email to see if I can order it…..should not be thinking about starting something else especially since my holidays are almost over and I am back to work on Tuesday..but couldn’t resist. Hope you and your family have a fantastic 2008.
Hugs – Lorraine
Oh no Andrea, thank goodness you and your home is okay. I know how scary it can b to have trees fall. Clarice
So glad you were happily inside creating when you lost your tree. Although it is always sad when a tree goes. I do so love oak trees.
Glad you are safe and sound.

I am so glad you are yours are ok! Scary stuff – you can see the pictures but I would imagine in person, it must really be surreal to see. And glad that the car didn’t get it too!
You are so crafty! Love the runner! Maybe I will have to think of something to make so I can try out the waxed paper idea.
Have a great day!
Margie
Sorry about your bench! =O But that craft you worked on while stuck in the house is GORGEOUS! I love the colors you’ve used, too!
WOW! Love the new banner! Very you. ^_^ We have been parking the mini across from the neighbors house to avoid the tree in front of the Villa… it has been dropping smaller branches left and right. Your felt project is coming along nicely!!
Absolutely gorgeous and what a great tip! Thks. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. I am not great with handwork (no patience, lol) so really appreciate the effort others put in to beautiful work like yours.
Sorry about your bench! i hate wind storms, we have so many here it seems, thankfully no trees close to the house. i love the felt flowers and can’t wait to see the finished product. thanks for the great tip about freezer paper. i just bought a huge box at the grocery and havn’t really used it for anything crafty yet. but now i have ideas swarming:)
Wow – your bench got completely whammied! I’m glad no one was hurt. Your new applique project is just lovely, btw.
Wow that is a huge tree!. I worry about that sometimes with our trees. I never knew that about freezer paper. What a great idea! I will have to purchase a large roll now.
Cool table runner, all kinds of bright tropical flowers happening there to brighten your day.
Good luck with the Beachy’s challenge.
Know this: Ugly, scrubby pine trees live forever!!! That is a sad fact of life. sigh.
We had wind storms on this side of the country yesterday. I saw photos in the paper this morning of rather large trees knocked over…We were spared except for losing some trash can lids!
I got a nice bunch of buttons of ebay in an old cookie tin. What is it about buttons anyway??? Wish I had more sparkley ones, though!
Take care.
So pretty, I will be watching to see the finished product!
