  • For the typography geek in your life:  Typography sketchbooks
  • I love enameled ware.  On my wishlist:  Lidded mug, new thermometer and an excellent way to start your day
  • I thought the little secret message in a bottle was sweet but I think the sellers' philosophy about how and why they do what they do was even sweeter
  • I believe it.  Dirt can make you happy
  • There is something kind of foreboading about Edward Hopper's Cape Cod Evening.  The dark trees surrounding the house, the closed off posture of the woman and the dog distracted by something (someone?) approaching.  This clever video captures it

Happy Friday the 13th!  I plan on staying as cool as possible.  It has been hot!  Like 108 degrees kind of hot.  Kind of takes the starch right out of a person.

Jessica from Such Pretty Things does a blog feature called Target Tuesdays that I just love.  She always finds really cute things (love the flatware!) from one of my favorite stores.  This is my little homage to Target Tuesdays.

Last year I missed out these enameled cutlery caddies.  I was sure that it would be an unrequited love since it was part of their seasonal offerings.  But today I was browsing the aisles and found it!  They are with the seasonal picnic/beach items.

I have no intention of using it for cutlery – I wanted it for housekeeping supplies.  I don't see the white online but they do have a round version and some in other colors.  Or you could pop into your local Target and see if they have them in stock.  Don't wait too long and miss out like I did last year!

It's hard to get back to the swing of work when you have had a five day weekend.  I think the weekends are completely backwards, don't you?  EVERY weekend should be five days.

We had a guest for part of the time and I put a little arrangement of carnations in her room to welcome her.  I love the combination of pinks and coral with the (faux) Jadite vase (actually it's a cachepot that I got a few years ago at Trader Joe's of all places).

I like doing little touches like this when people come to visit.  Since we live a ways away from most of our family and friends I like to make their stay with us special so they want to come back.

You might have to share the guest room if you do visit, however.

I'm trying to get back into the mindset that I can do a quick, short blog post.  Not every single one has to be a photographic or literary masterpiece.  So today you get a cheery vase of flowers.

  • National Parks checklist I like how it gets more colorful the more parks you visit
  • Since I've got the earring thing all under control I might as well pick up a few more pair.  Peridot or crystal?
  • Be optimistic
  • Did you know today is National Kissing Day?  Quick!  Go smooch someone!
  • Man interviews himself, 20 years later.  Very clever.  And funny.

I'm halfway through my five day weekend.  I'm actually making good headway on my projects too.  I finished my earring holder and painted the inside of my fireplace (word of warning – that paint is TOXIC.  What few brain cells I had left have been seriously compromised…) and I'm halfway done with a chair recovering project (big reveal next week).

We have a house guest arriving tonight so I think the rest of the weekend will be quite lazy.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Earring holder 1

Happy day after the 4th of July and welcome to my bathroom.

I managed to parlay a mid-week day off into a five day weekend. My plan being to work on a few projects that have been on my to do list for some time now.

One of those projects was to create an earring holder.  I have a thing for dangly, sparkly earrings (What? You didn't know this about me?) but I didn't have a good way of storing them.  Beyond that door on the left is our walk in closet.  I have a dresser in there and the top drawer has an insert for storing jewelry but I find that it doesn't work for my earring collection.

The lighting is all over the place in these pictures.  The wall color is really a French vanilla and the frame is a pale ballet pink.  I took a vintage frame and painted it with Martha Stewart's craft paint in Pink Viburnum (the perfect, pale, almost white neutral pink).  Then I cut a piece of 1/4 inch wire cloth to fit the back.  My frame had a slot that the backing slides into so I just slid the wire into it.  No need to staple or nail it to the frame.

I painted all the small framed pictures with the same paint.

Now I can see my earrings all on display.  One thing that is glaringly obvious is that I need a pair of gold and pale turquoise earrings.  How many times do I feature a pair on my Friday's Favorites?  You would think I would at least have one pair.
