Friday’s Favorites (Saturday edition)

  • I think everyone knows about Tom's shoes and how for every pair that is purchased another pair is donated to a needy child.  Well Tom's has a similar program when you buy a pair of sunglasses.  Their One For One program will help pay for glasses, surgery or medical care.
  • Gorgeous gold and peacock blue dangly earrings
  • This is kind of fascinating.  A pictoral blog devoted to what items different people would grab from a burning house:  The Burning House
  • A great tutorial on felt pillows.  I would do an all white or cream version.
  • I love inspiration boards.  Snippet and Ink has a great collection of them.

Sorry for the late Friday's Favorites post.  I didn't get back to California until almost Midnight last night and it was a grueling week long conference.

In honor of Texas being my home for the past week I did a Texas themed Flickr mosaic.  Texas is big, friendly and very neat and tidy.  Those were my impressions.  I wish I had more time to explore – I spent most of my time in a conference room or my hotel room.  Next time I hope to give it a proper visit.

Happy weekend everyone!

One of the things I wanted to do at the shower was honor the two Grandmothers-to-be.  Just something to commemorate a very special time in their lives.

I decided to put together a little "Grandma Survival Kit."

Shower2

In it was:

  • How To Be The Perfect Grandmother (both could probably have written it…)
  • Lip balm for kissing boo boos
  • Band-Aids in case their kisses needed a back up
  • Hand lotion (because grandmothers always have the softest hands)
  • Hanky for drying tears (and the occasional tell-tale signs of chocolate before the parents get back…)
  • Hard candies because Grandmothers ALWAYS have hard candies in their purse.
  • And a purse sized photo album so they could prove their granddaugher was the sweetest one around.

Shower1

I have time for a quick post then I need to hop on a plane for Texas.  I'll be spending the week near Dallas for work.

Yesterday my cousin Stephanie and I hosted a baby shower for my niece Sara.  We had so much fun planning and executing it.  From printing up the invitations to making the cupcakes for dessert.

Shower5

Pickles and icecream cookies for everyone to take home.  Stole the idea from Bridget at Bake at 350.  Thank you for the idea Bridget.  Everyone thought I was a superstar to come up with that idea.  Ha!

I have a few projects that I did for the shower that I'll be sharing this week.  I'm hoping to blog from my lonely hotel room.  What else am I going to do?

Shower4

Okay I better run.  I don't think they'll hold the plane for me.  Oh!  Better pack hair products.  There is no telling what the Texas heat and humidity is going to do to my hair.

(Seriously – are these not the cutest cookies you've ever seen??)

  • Have I shown these already?  I love mixed metal earrings.  I wear a slender gold chain around my neck, with three charms in silver and golds, so I never feel like my metals have to be matchy.  One of the charms, a silver miracle medal, fell off some time yesterday.  So I'm not sure if I should be worried or if a miracle is about to happen…
  • Love this blog devoted to paper cutting.  Truly amazing.
  • Some of the most clever ideas are so simple!  DIY ruffled streamers.
  • Who didn't love the Memory Game growing up?  Love this felt and fabric version.  I think the second one shown would be great for younger children and as they get old the first set would be more challenging.  I say collect charm packs with impunity!
  • I really want to do this with my filing cabinet (that hides in a closet since it isn't fit for company).

Sorry for the lack of posts this week – lots of crafty, bakey goodness going on but it's for a Baby Shower my niece and I are hosting and I can't spill the beans just yet.  Next week I'll be travelling to Plano, Texas all week but I'll have some posts scheduled so you can see what I was up to.

Happy Weekend Everyone!!

I'm not much of a breakfast eater.  I generally make myself a cup of tea and then a while later I might have a piece of toast.  And I only do that because all the nutritional pundits claim your metabolism will grind to a halt if you don't eat something for breakfast.

Since we had a houseguest this weekend I wanted to have something on hand so that when we got up in the morning I could wave my hand in the general direction of the kitchen and say "have at it."

I figured a quick bread would be suitable.  I made Nancy McDemott's pear bread as adapted by Smitten Kitchen.

Pears are tricky.  They are like avocados in that you have to think ahead to when you want to use them and buy them a few days ahead of time.  Otherwise they are rock hard and flavorless.  I also don't know if Bartlett pears are the best baking pears.  They were okay but the bread wasn't as peary tasting as I wanted it to be.  It did smell heavenly while baking but it could have been zucchini bread or persimmon bread for all the pear flavor it had.

I understand that the flavors of the bread develop over a couple of days so I'm hoping that in a day or two it wil be the pear bread that I was envisioning.

Now if we only had a coffee maker I would be the perfect hostess.
