Under a Blue Moon

Decor, cooking, organization, all the pretty things

And there goes January

I understand the Queen has some openings.  I may throw my crown into the ring.

Isn’t that a pretty crown?  I have been looking for one exactly like that and found an Etsy seller that goes by the name, appropriately, The Queen of Crowns.  Shipping was lightening fast.  I liked this crown so much I ordered a smaller version to keep it company.

I ordered a few new books to inspire me.  So far I haven’t cracked them open yet.  Haha!

I’m probably the last to know about Nikki Boyd but she is a professional organizer out of South Carolina.  I’ve only flipped through her book but it is gorgeous.

I’m hoping to get some inspiration for my two problem closets.  Or maybe she’ll see this post and take pity on me and come organize them for me.

One can dream.

We are getting that sly January weather where the temperatures are starting to head to the 70’s and you are lulled into thinking that Spring is imminent.  It’s not.  We’ll get another six or eight weeks of rainy, cold weather for sure.

Let’s see what else is going on around here?  I haven’t done any projects except for one small one.  I have a chandelier like votive holder that hangs over my kitchen sink.  I’ve probably had it for ten or twelve years.  The “crystals” are plastic and over the past couple of years they have turned cloudy and yellow.

I found some inexpensive glass replacement parts off of Amazon and thought I would give them a try.  They are perfect.  I needed about 90 of them so I wasn’t about to try to find actual crystals.  The glass ones look and feel like real crystal and at a fraction of the cost.  I do like how it turned out.

All nice and sparkly again.

I hope your year is going well so far.  I know everyone says January lasts 927 days but to me it has flown by.

Until next time.

Tidying

There is something about January that makes me want to organize and clean.  My Expedit (old version of the Ikea Kallax) was looking a bit haphazard and disorganized.  There wasn’t much I could really pare down but I did get new storage boxes (Bigso boxes from The Container Store) to replace the Ikea boxes I have been using for well over a decade.  They were looking a bit worse for wear.

Not to mention I lost the lid to one of them behind the shelving and there is no way I can retrieve it.  We’ll get it if/when we move…

Here’s a before.  I tried to keep the lighting the same because nothing irritates me more than before and after pictures where the after has been edited and filtered to save its life.  It’s hardly a fair comparison.

Yikes.

I’ve toyed with the idea of getting the Ikea Billy cabinets with glass doors because I really like the look but I don’t think I would get the same level of organization that I do with my Expedit unit.  Those drawer inserts are fabulous.

I love the new storage boxes.  I was fully intending to get white but when I went into The Container Store the pink jumped into my cart.   They are a neutral blush color.

I think switching up the storage containers by moving the green bins to the top row makes it all look less cluttered.  I did remove some of the decor type stuff but left all my jars of buttons and other notions and my collection of Eiffel Towers.

I tried to pare down some of the books but had a hard time getting rid of much.  I do have two copies of Trish Foley’s “The Natural Home” so I removed one (if anyone wants it let me know by commenting.  First come first served).

I’m going to have to get rid of a few more if I want to add any new books.  These are all my decorating, gardening and craft related books.

The rest of the office still needs attention.  I don’t even want to talk about the closet in here.  When we first moved in I had Rick install deep shelves for me but I can never keep them organized.  Anytime I want anything I have to pull out half the stuff to get to it.  It’s a weird shape.  It’s basically a four foot by four foot square that was added to one corner of the room and then the corner that sticks into the room was lopped off and a door put in.

I’ve seriously considered enlisting the help of a professional organizer to make some sense of it.

Come to think of it, our guest room closet is also a hot mess and could use some professional help.  Has anyone ever used a professional organizer?  Is it horribly expensive?

For now I’ll just tackle the areas I can manage on my own.

Hello 2020!

Happy New Year!!

I hope your holidays, however you celebrated, where all that you hoped they would be.  I was very fortunate in that I had the last two weeks of the year off from work so I could really relax and enjoy them.  We had a quiet Christmas Eve with just the two of us.  Normally my Mother in Law comes to spend the night but she came down with the flu and couldn’t join us.

Christmas day we spent my Dad’s house and it was very boisterous, as it is every year.  Complete pandemonium and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I, for one, am so completely sick of eating and drinking.  I am really going to focus on getting back to my healthy habits in January.  I ate all the things in December and I am paying the price in terms of how I feel (sluggish).

I’m not calling them resolutions, but I do have some goals for 2020.  I have broken them down into categories with my vision for each category, my measurable goals for each particular vision and the action items needed to achieve them.

Along with the usual health related categories (physical and mental) I also have a home related vision.  There are a number of small projects I want to tackle this year that I just never seem to get around to.  I thrive with a to do list so I’m in the process of setting up my bullet journal with an entire section on what I want to achieve at home.  I’ll share that with you in another post.

Speaking of posting…I know that the past six months things have pretty much dried up around here and I’m ever hopeful that I can be more present this year.

I just wanted to pop on and wish you all a very Happy New Year!

Hi.

I thought I better drop and say hello before you all thought I had just given up the ghost.  I haven’t.  I’m still trying to get my new normal under control.  I don’t even seem to read blogs anymore, much less post on my own.

What’s ironic is with this new job I absolutely cannot work over 40 hours a week.  In my old job it was normal for me to work an hour or two in the evenings, just catching up with email.  So you would think I would have MORE time to post.  It’s not really a time issue, it’s a creative issue.  Since I’m still settling into things I just don’t have any energy when I get off of work to do anything blog worthy.

But I can chat so that is what you are getting today.

I also wanted to share two pretty things I recently purchased.

The first is this absolutely lovely photograph I bought at a local antique store.  It was taken at the Nonomiya studio in Tokyo around, I’m guessing, the 1930’s.  The young woman has such a beautiful face and I love that she isn’t in traditional Japanese clothing.  I get such a feeling of calm and loveliness when I look at it.  You can see why I had to get it.

The other thing I bought is a print from the artist Lisa Finch.  She is @frenchcanvas on Instagram.   I sent my niece Stephanie this print because it truly is her living her best life.

I need to find the perfect frame for my print and then I think I’ll hang it in my kitchen somewhere.

I hope you all are doing well.  Thanks for putting up with my erratic posting.

New stationery bits

It’s been a minute.

I stumbled across some gorgeous stationery bits that thrilled my minimalist planner heart and wanted to share in case anyone else loves that particular aesthetic.

They are from the online store Cloth & Paper.

I’ve settled into a hybrid bullet journal/planner system that works for me and the bits I ordered work well with it.

I shared the planner I am using (and still very much loving) which I ordered off of Amazon.  The cover is faux leather and cleans up like a dream.  It has held up so well and still looks brand new.  I bought the inserts from Michaels and while I like the design and the tabs, I think I’ll ditch the pre-printed weekly pages and design my own.  Or get dot grid paper and use that.  I have a paper punch that lines up with the rings in the planner so I can make any type of page I like.

So what did I get from Cloth & Paper?  I bough a set of  minimal shapes stickers.  If you bullet journal you can use them in place of drawing squares and circles.  The set comes with dots, squares, hexagons, triangles and strips.  They are translucent.  I bought the color Cotton which is a pale greyish pink.   They look more pink in the photo but are a little ashier in real life.

I also bought some transparent page flags.  The color is also called Cotton but they are a brighter, truer pink.  I wish the minimal shapes were actually this color.

I bought some transparent sticky notes in two sizes.  I think this thrills me the most.  No more neon sticky notes!  One complaint I have about them is the sticky part sometimes leaves a bit of residue on the note below it.  It rubs off easily but is annoying.  Another thing to note about them (and the minimal shapes) is they are a bit like writing on vellum and ink can smear, depending on the type of pen you use.  My beloved Pentel EngerGel needle point smears like mad.  I have a Faber-Castell Pitt Artist pen that doesn’t smear at all.  I may look into getting some finer point versions to see if they might replace (GASP!) the Pentels.

And finally, I bought a white fountain pen.  I fully admit I bought it for prop purposes.  I can’t get it to work.  I don’t think it’s the pen, I think it is me.  I can never get fountain pens to work.  I put in the ink cartridge and nothing happens.  No ink will come out.  I don’t know if you are supposed to condition fountain pens or what.  I may have to do some research.

My order arrived quickly and was beautifully packaged.  Granted it was a bit extravagant for office supplies but I’m enjoying it all.

Not apologizing…

I brought out my Halloween decor.

Not the skelly parts – just the pumpkins so I can legitimately call it autumnal and not Halloween.

But who are we kidding?

I bought a couple of new “vintage” mercury glass pumpkins at Joanns this week for 70 % off.  Can’t beat that. I’ll wait a few weeks to add my skelly rats and other more typically Halloween decor.

Side note.  It is impossible to take a picture full on of an entry table or a mantel when there is a mirror involved.  So the above is actually two pictures.  The original has me in my leggings and over sized t-shirt reflected in the mirror.  But I swapped out that with a generic background pictures.

I do love my entry way.  And it will stay this way until after Thanksgiving when the Christmas decor will make an appearance.

Isn’t it nuts we are talking about Christmas?  Seriously?  Where did the year go!
