My mantel has been in flux for a year now. After the holidays last year it just didn't seem to come together, no matter what I threw up there.
When I look at pictures of other people's mantels I like the kind of layered, casual look. Nothing too studied or precise.
But when I try to do that myself another side of me, a VERY symmetrical side, takes over and dictates that the mantel will be perfectly balanced – and further more – there will be none of that hodge-podge, stuff stacked up in front of each other business.
Very bossy, that symmetrical side.
Sigh. What I need is a mirror, like this one (only painted white). That would fill up the space better. And then it wouldn't look so, so….repressed.
Someone snuck a Christmas ornament up there…
Don't tell old bossy boots.

I think it looks rather lovely already…but if you are not satisfied – keep at it! You’ll get there in the end xxx

I’ve got a giant TV sitting on my mantel…it makes me bummed out every time I look at it! There’s no other place for it, sadly. So just be glad you can put whatever you want on your mantel, however you happen to arrange it! LOL!

Looks very pretty. My mantel is loaded with vintage childrens’ books, pictures, and masks made by the eleven year old. Yours is so calm and inviting. ~Kelly

Hey, isn’t that my Nancy Drew book?
I think your mantel looks serene and beautiful, just like you.

Maybe a rectangular mirror shaped like a door? You know, higher than wider? Or a circle mirror? Or an oval. But a circle sounds best in a silvery frame. Not silver but with some shine. But in a matte finish. But thank goodness no tv is there. I am so sad when I see people put the tv above the fireplace. What a shame!
