If you had the opportunity to raise peacocks would you do it? At the beginning of the year a friend of Rick's called him and said her neighbor had moved and had abandoned a peahen and her chicks.
They (the neighbors) had a pair of them and when they moved they took the male but for some reason left behind the female. I'm guessing looks had something to do with it. Rick's friend went over to check on her and found a nest of eggs and then a few weeks later they hatched.
We did not take them (otherwise you know I would be blogging the high heavens out of them) because we wanted to remain on civil terms with our own neighbors who may not relish the sound of peafowl in such close proximity. They are very noisy, you know. The peafowl – not the neighbors.
Last night I had one of those dreams that feels like you are absolutely awake and it's really happening. I dreamed I got up in the middle of the night and looked out our sliding glass door and there was a big peacock standing on the deck, looking in. I looked past him and there were a dozen more on the lawn.
I was so disappointed to wake up and find out it was just a dream. It looked positively bucolic with them out there.
Now I'm wondering if we were too hasty in turning down the peahen and her babies.
Has anyone had any experience with peacocks? Had them yourself or know someone that did?
(I can just see Rick getting very nervous at the direction this post is taking….)

(those are the actual peafowl that were offered up. How could we have refused at all! They are so cute!)

Ah, I wanted to hear that you’d taken them home. I know he really wants to know someone actually told you that! They’re so sweet!

I love peeps of all varieties. Well, not the icky marshmellow kind. Peapeeps. That’s a new one to me. I say you hunt them down and relocate them to Chez Andrea’s.

I’m not building a Peacock house.

LOL…funny Rick! Thanks for the photo. I’ve never seen baby peacocks…they are beautiful. Perhaps you can talk with the neighbors…warn them…and then if it didn’t work out you could donate them to a zoo???

Hi,
I’m new to your blog and I just love it!
I live in a neighborhood in Florida that has wild peacocks all over the place. I love them, but some of my neighbors do not! They are very noisy and come out a dawn and at dusk and roam around. They usually hide during the day, but it is very hot here, so I don’t know what they would do in milder California climate. They will get on your car and roof and they do poop all over the place. But they are very smart too. I have one whom I call “Stumpy” because of a deformed foot and he will eat out of my hand. If I’m outside and he is across the street,he will come when I call him; or sometimes he stands in front of my house and calls me! He eats dog or cat food, rice, popcorn, seeds, and even a ham sandwich! They also love young plants and flowers, especially begonias. Even with all the poop and the awful noise, I would want them around just to see the spectacular colors on their necks and heads and when they open their tails, it is just breathtaking! I hope this helps you make a decision! Kind Regards,
Maria

They don’t need a House ;), they have slept perfectly on the fence, now they move to the tree (two houses down the street). I was very fascinating to watch them as they were preparing for the night…..she couldn’t fit them under the wings, or would lose balance and almost knock them off the fence, or just being clumsy and trying to maneuver on the fence without knocking them down.
On the photo they are 1 month old.
Nowadays, there are three of them left: mom and only two kids (I have no idea what have happened to other three, they just disappear one morning after a lot of noise then they were around 2-3 month old. They were not staying in the backyard at night, but some tree in the neighborhood. ) They don’t come to my backyard anymore, but just wonder in the area. I thought that all of them are gone, till last week when I saw them on big oak tree two houses down.
Sorry for taking up a lot of space…..they just have grown on me and dear to me and I like talking about them….. 🙂
