Excuse the Loch Ness Monster quality of the photo – Rick took it with his cellphone late Sunday afternoon.
We have an egg!! Our $1500 egg has finally been laid! We're chicken grandparents!!
Rick and I cleaned out the coop and run Sunday morning and there was no egg. Around 6:30 Sunday evening he went out and one of the chickens left an offering for him by run screen door.
We have an idea it might have been one of the Buff Cochins – she was acting kind of coy yesterday - wanting to hang out in the coop rather than come out with all her sisters for an afternoon treat of crickets and meal-worms. She could not be persuaded to join in the festivities, choosing instead to watch from the safety of the coop doorway.
Just for comparison sake – here is the inaugural egg compared to one purchased at the grocery store (large, unfertilized):

Congratulations! Don’t worry, they’ll get bigger. The first egg is always special.
Pesky Patti says
Wow! When I ask at the grocery store people just stare at me…maybe you can answer…do brown eggs taste like chocolate? Congratulations on your new arrival!
Karen K says
Patti if brown eggs taste like chocolate I am getting some brown egg laying chicken asap. Now if I can just find some that lay peanut butter and chocolate eggs I could die a happy woman. Fat and happy. Congratulations on the inaugural egg Andrea! She is a beauty!
Alexis says
Mazel Tov!
I want to find a chicken that lays Cadbury Creme Eggs!
Bren says
Yeaaa!. . . congratulations. . . “Grandma”! What’cha gonna do with it? It would be fun to hollow out the insides (yoke & white) & fill it with plaster so you could save it for display. (I’m a sentimental fool, though. . .) ;o)
