Hello and Happy Friday!  Even though I’m not currently working I still look forward to the weekend.  I have a friend coming to visit tomorrow so I’m especially looking forward to this one.   I may make the blackberry infused Prosecco linked above to celebrate.

The weather promises to be gorgeous so I’m thinking we’ll dine outside tomorrow.  It’s so pretty when the twinkly lights and chandelier are lit.   Plus it is fun to set up a pretty table out there.

Have a wonderful weekend!

More loveliness from the garden courtesy of the roses

Cottage bouquet

Goodness we went from cold and windy on Saturday to the 90’s today.   It feels like we just fell headlong into Summer.  Which, truth be told, I am not quite ready for.

I thought I better bring in some roses before they got all wilty and sad.  I also gathered up some viburnum and even sacrificed some lilacs for the cause.

This pretty rose is an odd one to try to use in bouquets.  It almost has a silvery grey cast to it that doesn’t play well with the other roses.  It is a classic tea rose with nice stems and reliably shaped blossoms.  I think I need to pair it with some dusty miller and maybe some darker salvia.  Play up its strengths.

I know I really need to get out into the garden and fertilize and weed but I’m having the hardest time drumming up the enthusiasm.  Particularly when it is this hot out.

Next week I’ll have some crafty projects to share with you.  I’ve been feeling rather creative.  Probably because it is an indoor sport.  🙂   Next week it is supposed to drop back down into the 70s so I’ll try get outside and catch up on my gardening chores.

Lilac Season

Lilac close up

Two years ago Rick and I went on a lilac bender and bought something like eight lilac bushes.  They have finally settled in and are providing the most heavenly scent and color to the garden.

I think in general lilacs prefer a colder winter climate than we can give them but we have planted varieties that do well in our mild winters.

When we bought them I envisioned bringing in armloads into the house and having bouquets in every room.  However we can’t bring ourselves to cut any off the bushes.  They look too pretty!

We still have some work to do out here.  Like replanting a lot of our pots with annuals.  That bacopa in the urn has seen better days.  I need to spend a day pulling out all the old and taking inventory.  Then a trip to the nursery is in order.

The roses are all in full bloom despite me not doing a hard prune like I normally do every winter.

Here we have two Rosa Banks that have been trained to climb up the fence.  They are doing so much better since we took out a couple of overgrown shrubs that were planted in front of them.  Very reliable bloomers but they really only do the one fabulous flush of blooms with maybe a sporadic bloom here and there for the rest of the season.  But the hydrangeas will start blooming and we won’t notice as much.

That camellia that you see blooming away is the “In the Pink” I showed in a previous post.

Rose covered shed

The Cecille Brunner is another really reliable bloomer and looks gorgeous covering the shed.  There is another lilac too.  And a bucket I forgot to move out of the shot…

I’ll leave you with one last shot of the lilac.  I do with they would hurry up and perfect Smell-O-Vision so you could experience how gorgeous it smells around here.

Lilacs

It’s lilac time ♥  ◊  Lilac from me too……  ◊  Faded lilacs  ◊  Lilac

Hello and Happy Friday!

We have been entertaining our granddaughter all week so no faves for today.  She is a joy but is at an age that requires constant attention.  We have had a number of adventures geared for a two and a half year old.  We went to the library for reading hour on rainy Monday and checked out some books (the self checkout process was of more interest to her than the actual books).  Tuesday we explored the garden and then went to a park.  Wednesday was quite the busy day with first going to Ardenwood Historical Farm where we fed chickens, pet a rabbit, saw goats, cows, pigs, sheep and even some peacocks.  Then in the afternoon we went to another park where she and two other children had quite the sand castle operation going on.

Thursday (today as I am typing this…) we are going to make cookies and go play in the fountains downtown.  It is supposed to be quite warm so it will be the perfect afternoon for that.

Friday (today as you are reading this…) is up in the air.  We may take another trip to the library and hit up another park.  We are returning her to her parents Friday evening and then I am going to rest for the remainder of the weekend!  Toddler wrangling is exhausting!

I will be making some macarons for Easter.  We have our annual Easter brunch at my father’s house and I will bring those along with a couple of other more traditional brunch offerings (like Mimosas).

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dollhouse: Attic Floor

I finished the attic floor last week and I wanted to share my process.  Please keep in mind I am a complete novice at this so this may be a cautionary tale as well as a bit of instruction.

I’ll explain what I did and what I would have done differently.

Here is the finished product.  Keep in mind my plan for the attic space is to have it look rough-hewn and a bit time worn.

I used craft sticks I purchased at Joann‘s.  They are tongue depressor sized (6″ x 3/4″).  I trimmed off the rounded edges using a band saw.  The wood is too hard to hand trim using an Xacto knife.  Trust me I tried.

I went back and forth on whether the boards should run side to side or back to front and in the end decided side to side would be easiest.  I started in the front and worked my way back.  I didn’t want to have a narrow board at the very front.  I staggered my starting piece in each row so where the ends join up wouldn’t be uniform.

I used wood glue to adhere the flooring to the dollhouse floor and as I mention in a  previous post I did paint the floor brown before hand.  I also wallpapered the walls first.  Tip number 1:  If you are going to add baseboards I recommend painting up the wall 1/8″ – 1/4″ so help disguise any cracks between the floor and the baseboards.

After I did a few rows I noticed the boards were cupping a little bit along the long edges.  I used a board and some clamps to help flatten them.   However this type of clamping only works for the boards closest to the opening of the dollhouse.  Unless you have some sort of fancy clamp that reaches further back.

What I did further back was place heavy items on top of the boards.  Here I’m using an assortment of marble coasters, a metal chunk and some large candles.

I was still left with some edges that were uneven but I did a good sanding with 60 grit sand paper that smoothed them out enough and still left me with that rough hewn look I was aiming for.

Here it is before staining and adding the baseboards.  Also this picture was taken before I removed a couple of boards in the back that just weren’t laying flat.  I cut new boards, glued them down and weighted them, then resanded.  The back rows where just a little more awkward to install.

My approach for the second floor wood flooring will be different.  I’ve already done the bedroom flooring which is a herring-bone pattern.  I did it on a large piece of cardstock and then cut it to the size of the room.  Because the room is essentially a rectangle this was an easy method.  I’m not sure how to tackle the stair landing as there is a staircase to deal with.  Part of me is temped to remove the staircase and replace it because wasn’t assembled or painted very nicely.  I actually already have a spare staircase I can use.

The bottom, living room area floor will probably be down on cardstock and then cut to size.  It’s not quite a rectangle but I think I can manage the cutouts for the bay windows.   The living room and kitchen will be tiled (well, faux tiled…)

The attic space, minus a few accessories, is finished!
