Paso Robles

I spent the later half of last week in Paso Robles visiting one of my oldest friends.  Meaning I’ve known her a long time, not that she is old.  🙂  Because if she is old then I’m old and I’m am not about to admit that…

We share a love of vintage and exploring antique stores and then hitting up a winery for a little wine tasting.  The picture above was taken at Niner Wine Estates.  It was a bit on the brisk side but we sat outside so we could enjoy the view.  Isn’t it lovely how that grove of oak trees forms the shape of a heart?  We were there just as the sun was starting to dip and the light was just beautiful.

The winery cat came to pay us a visit while we were sitting out there.  I think he was looking for a warm lap.  Or just being a good host.

I’ll share my antiquing finds in a later post.  What I want to share with you is the most fabulous cocktail experience we had.  The rest of the pictures in this post are taken from the Eleven Twenty Two website.

Eleven Twenty Two is a cocktail lounge/speakeasy in downtown Paso Robles.  The concept is to recreate a prohibition era speakeasy and the ambiance and the cocktails they serve is very in keeping with that time period.  The bartenders and other staff are all in 30’s style clothing.

The entrance is a very unassuming door where you have to ring a bell to gain entrance.  The doorman (or woman as the case may be) will slide open a small window in the door and let you know if you can enter or not.

The capacity is 28 guests at one time and we did have to wait about 15 minutes on a rainy Wednesday evening to be let in.

We were hoping to sit at the bar but all the seats were taken so we were seated at the L-shaped marble table on the right in the photograph below.  Every detail was just gorgeous.  As soon as we were seated the door woman brought us water in crystal tumblers that were placed on a cloth cocktail napkins.  We were also given leather bound cocktail menus to peruse.

The cocktail making is quite the production and even if you can’t sit at the bar the bartender will come table-side and create your cocktail on a cart right in front of you.

My friend’s boyfriend ordered a rye whisky drink called Montenegro’s Revenge and it was quite the production.  First the glass was chilled with dry ice.  Then a piece of wood was set on fire and the resulting smoke was captured in the glass.  Then something was sprayed into the glass and set alight.  Orange rind was rubbed on the rim and then some super fancy whisky was poured into the glass.  I am not a whisky drinker by any means but I had a sip and it was so smooth and smoky that I would consider ordering it the next time (oh there will be a next time) I go there.

My friend ordered absinthe and I’m telling you I could totally get into drinking it just for all the accoutrements.  They brought her a beautiful glass with the absinthe along with an absinthe spoon with a lump of sugar.  Then they placed the most gorgeous absinthe fountain on the table and let the water drip slowly through the sugar, into her glass.

If you are in the Paso Robles area I highly recommend stopping in and checking it out.  The drink prices can be eye-wateringly high, depending on what you order, but the ambiance is such a glamorous step back in time and absolutely worth the experience.

  • I’m fairly certain I trot this out every December but this truly is the best smelling fresh cut Christmas tree candle there is.  I’ve tried a number of them none are as good.  You don’t even have to light it – it smells good just sitting there on your counter
  • How pretty is this tea set?  I would get a cup and saucer in each color and have a tea party
  • Speaking of tea – The best places for high tea in the US.  Or if you want something the bay area – the 14 posh places for Afternoon Tea in San Francisco.  I just had a great idea for a blog post series…the best places in THE WORLD to have tea.  I’m on it!  I just need a sponsor….
  • Every year my sister Kate spends about two thousand hours in the kitchen (beaten only by the pounds of butter she uses) and bakes a fabulous assortment of Christmas cookies that she gives to every family member.  This being said I rarely bake during the holiday season.  But I may make an exception for these pretty snowflake Linzer cookies.  Linzer cookies have a soft spot in my heart because my youngest and I used to make them.  I need to fish out my snowflake cookie cutter

Yay!  We made it to Friday!  I’m still in Paso Robles having the time of my life.  The older I get the less time I seem to have to connect with friends.  I have been cherishing these past few days.  There is something to be said about just being able to hang out with old friends – there is no drama, no effort.  Just great conversation and catching up.

I’m heading back home today after a leisurely breakfast and then this weekend – who knows!  There is no rain in sight so maybe I’ll try to talk Rick into a Saturday drive to Tiburon for lunch and exploring.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Morning Twinkle

IMG_5451

I got up really early yesterday morning and the lights looked so pretty in the early dawn light.  This is our little courtyard.  The one that tricks people into thinking we have a duplex.  The front door is on the corner of the house and this is between the house and the garage.  That rose bush over the gate just finally gave up its last bloom and the leaves are starting to fall off.

Are you a white light or a colored light kind of Christmas decorator?  I like both but tend to stick to white for our decor.

I caved and bought a new faux indoor tree.  I went with white lights where in the past we would always do colored lights on the tree in the house.  I bought the tree from Balsam Hill.  It is a 6 1/2 foot Balsam Fir.  I dithered back and forth on whether I should get the flocked or not and in the end decided not to.  I think it will be more versatile.

First I put it up and left it undecorated for a few hours to see how the girls would react.  They were more interested in the box.

I have decorated it with unbreakable ornaments.  I also made more star garlands using a smaller star punch this time.  I am really enjoying how they look and they are so easy to make.  I made five garlands, each six feet long or so with a dozen stars on each one.

It's funny how some years I am just not as into decorating but this year I am full on board – probably because I have time on my hands.  I fully intend to enjoy this holiday season and not feel rushed or stressed about anything.

There's the real front door.  Too bad we can't have twinkly lights up all year round.  They sure are pretty.

Today I'm heading down to Paso Robles to visit one of my dear friends.  She and I are sure to hit up antique stores in the area.  There are some good ones there.  I purposely made my visit for Wed-Fri because a lot of them aren't open on Mondays or Tuesdays.  We might visit a winery or two while I'm down there too.

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Halfway to the weekend!

Chocolate Caramels with Sea Salt

201812027647476826008372056

Back when I was experimenting with macarons I discovered a baker on YouTube whose channel is called Cupcake Jemma.  While perusing her videos I came across her recipe for chocolate caramels with sea salt.  I thought they would make a great Christmas treat to give out.

It is a very simple recipe to follow but it does require two kitchen tools to be successful; a kitchen scale and a candy thermometer.

20181202884682708

For baking and candy making it is always better to weigh your ingredients than measure them.  I have this scale that measures in both grams and ounces.  You can also place your dish or bowl on it and set the scale to zero then add your ingredient.

Jemma's recipe called for golden syrup which is hard to find here in the US.  Corn syrup is NOT a good substitute.  I did find liquid raw sugar and used it in my batch.  I will try to locate the golden syrup for my next batch.

There are only six ingredients which are cream, dark chocolate, granulated sugar, golden syrup, butter and sea salt.  Amounts are listed on her video (I'm always hesitant to post someone else's recipe unless I have modified it in some way).

For the chocolate I used Trader Joe's dark chocolate with 56% cocoa.  It comes in a three pack and I used all three minus seven little squares.  What you do with the leftover squares is entirely up to you.  No judgement here.

A couple of notes on the steps.  Jemma's instructions had precise temperatures for caramelizing the sugar and for bringing the temperature  back up after adding the chocolate.  Both were just slightly above hard crack and hard ball.  I figured I would just use those settings (hard crack and hard ball) and I think I should have followed her specific temperatures.   My carmels turned out a little soft.  Good enough to keep in the fridge but not great for gifting.

I also want to try the recipe with the golden syrup like I mentioned.  I have read that World Market carries it or I can make my own rather easily.

In other news I should get my laptop back today.  I took the pictures in this post with my cellphone because I can't get photos from my camera onto my notepad.  So sorry for the poor quality.  Things should be back to normal on Wednesday.

Goodness is it hard to write and edit a post on a tablet.  My 6 month old laptop is in the hospital.  Not real happy about that but at least it is under warranty.   I should get it back in about a week .

We are having some deliciously gloomy, rainy weather.  Perfect for snuggling up by the fire and sipping tea.  We have the entire weekend stretching out in front of us and no plans.  It’s been about a month since we had one of those so I’m really looking forward to it.

One thing i have been working on is making the switch from Typepad to WordPress.  It will take a while but I think the new blog will be so much prettier and easier to navigate.  Something to look forward to in the new year.   The tricky part will be migrating almost 1300 blog posts but I’m determined to do it.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!
