Under a Blue Moon

We were quite productive on our long weekend.  One of the projects I completed was painting a small table and two chairs.

Originally they were white but over the years the paint has started peeling and degrading so when you sit on the chairs you are covered in a white powdery mess.

How I got the set is kind of an interesting story.  I probably shared it here before but to refresh your memory…

I went to one of my favorite antique malls to just browse and noticed all the vendors were busy packing up their booths.  One of the vendors explained to me that the company that ran the antique mall hadn't paid their rent in months and they got notice that the doors were going to be padlocked in 24 hours.  So they were all scrambling to pack up their inventory.

I had been eyeing this table and chairs but since I didn't really need it I couldn't justify the price.  It is not an antique but I like the looks of them.  The vendor said that if I wanted anything he would give me 50% off but not to pay for them at the cash register.  He didn't think the antique mall should get their cut of his sale under the circumstances.  I told him what I wanted (I also got a decorative metal wall hanging) and he met me out in the parking lot with the goods.

It felt like an illicit drug deal or something.

Now that the deck is very near completion and we are setting up the rest of the outdoor furniture this set just looked too shabby.  And not in a good, chic kind of way.

So I got out a wire brush and scrubbed the pieces down and them primered them black and then painted them with Rustoleum's Multicolor textured paint in kind of a bronzey-brown color (made for outdoor furniture).

I definitely recommend primering with a dark color first if you are going from light to dark.  My first attempt (using up an entire can) was unsuccessful.   So I bought spray primer and then tried again.  I still have a few spots that need to be touched up so I need one more can.

All in all – I'm pleased with how they turned out.

Just a quick post - This three day weekend has thrown me off and I keep thinking it is Monday.

Yesterday we celebrated a few birthdays in our family.  For my two neices I gave them some beauty products and a little bit of green for their wallets.  I wanted to do something different for the card.

I had some faux French postcards so I wrote my birthday wishes on the blank back and then I made vellum envelopes.  Tied them up with a slender ribbon and added an embellishment.

I've seen something similar but tied up with twine and an old rhinestone brooch that I used as my inspiration.  I think they turned out really cute.

  • Lovely, do it yourself wire cloche (using dollar store elements)
  • Clever ways to cut up fruit:  Watermelon, strawberries and kiwi (wish I had found these at the beginning of the Summer fruit season…)
  • Amazing transformation of an old side table, dresser and some wood trim
  • I'm not sure if it is the necklace I like or the photograph of the necklace.  Both are gorgeous

We have a skunk that has crawled under our heating/ac unit and died. The smell is permeating throughout the house.  Not a great start to the three day weekend.  Much worse for the skunk, all things considered….

I hope everyone has a lovely Labor Day holiday (if you are in the States).  Time to put away your white clothing and don more somber shades.

Things don't always go according to plan.  In my head I am going to bake these adorable cookies, decorate them and then photograph them so they are just scrumptious looking.

Before you click on the link to the recipe and inspiration for today's post please let me tell you a little bit about these cookies.

They are called Lemon Crisps but they aren't exactly crispy – they are kind of chewy.  Now the source of this recipe even said that hers turned out chewy too so I'm not feeling too discouraged about that.

I am kind of discouraged about my decorating skills.

And my cookie staging skills.

Okay go look at the original post on Whisk Kid: Inner Child – {Lemon Cookies}

But before you go – here are my first two batches (I could only go up from there…):

Fall Outfit

Fall Outfit by underabluemoon

I'm feeling a bit over the whole Summer thing.  I'm REALLY over high 90 temperatures.
I'm ready for actual shoes (instead of flip flops) and long pants.
I want to drive up to Apple Hill and ooh over all the changing colors.  I want my yearly apple fritter and to pick up a supply of apple butter and a pie to tuck into the freezer for later.
I want a certain crispness to the air and that feeling that the seasons are starting to change.  The smell of burning leaves and pumpkin soup simmering on the stove.
I would also like someone to buy me that Mulberry Alexa bag.
