Under a Blue Moon

Decor, cooking, organization, all the pretty things

Birdiepolooza

Bird1

There is quite a bit of bird hustle and bustle going on around here.  We have tenants in the skinny birdhouse (which I hung solely for decoration).  I'm not sure what kind of birds they are but they look like finches with a jaunty tail that points almost straight up.

They spend the day running back and forth across the railing (you can see one about mid-way on the railing, right above the flower pot) then up to the birdhouse or the feeder.

They chase the squirrels away too. I saw one divebombing some poor, unsuspecting squirrel that wandered too near.  The poor guy was just crossing the deck and I don't think he had any nefarious activities in mind at all.

I also bought a new hummingbird feeder.  It is quite pretty but it doesn't have very much red on it so I was afraid that the hummingbirds wouldn't even notice it.  So I stuck a red millinery flower on it.

And it worked!

Excuse my spotty window.  We had quite the rainy weather last week.

We've noticed two different hummingbirds using it but they chase each other off.  I may get another one and hang it on a different part of the deck so they can each have their own.

And finally, the girls are getting bigger and bigger.  They are looking like pre-teens.  Not quite gawky yet, but almost.  The cochins are really looking big.  They are all getting used to perching and they are very curious.  I couldn't take many pictures with the cage door open because it looked like they wanted to come out and see what I was doing.

We marked the ground for the coop and vegetable garden area.  I think we are going to break ground this week!

Marisolio

Marisolio3

On Friday Rick and I took a little road trip to the town of Murphys.  I had a table to drop off for my niece Sara and we wanted to see the new olive oil tasting bar she manages in Murphys, CA.

The drive from our house to Sara's is one of our favorites.  It takes about 90 minutes and most of the time we are on a gently meandering two lane highway through low hills with grazing cattle and charming farmhouses.  Bucolic comes to mind.

Marisolio4

Wouldn't you know it I forgot my camera again (I've been doing that a lot lately) so these pictures were taken with my cellphone and don't adequately capture how lovely Murphys is.

The owner of Marisolio, Mary Lou Schuster, has a 43-acre olive oil ranch with over 4000 olive trees in Copperopolis.  She has been selling her olive oils locally and decided to open up a tasting room.   The tasting room features over 25 varieties of olive oil and over 20 varieties of balsamic vinegar.

She also has olive related items; dipping plates, linens (like the hand embroidered towels above), jars of olives and tapenades.

But the main event is the tasting bar.  There are metal casks (called a fusti) filled with different varieties of olive oils and ceramic casks with balsamic vinegars.

Sara first set me up with a taste of chipotle infused olive oil with fig balsamic vinegar.  Sweet with a warm kick to it.   Then I tasted the honey ginger white balsamic vinegar which has an Asian flavor to it.  I can see it used in a vinegrette for a Chinese chicken salad or to marinate chicken for a stirfry.

I ended up buying a herb infused olive oil, the fig balsamic vinegar and the honey ginger white balsamic vinegar.  I could have easily picked about ten more but I showed some restraint.

I kind of wish I had also bought the chipotle olive oil because while Sara was ringing me up Cathy, one of Marisolio's staff, mentioned that she had made hummus with it and immediately I had a craving for hummus and crostini.

Well I'll use it at an excuse to go back up there.

After visiting Sara we strolled down Main Street.  Murphys really is a charming little town.  Lots of wine tasting and nice restaurants.  We popped into Nelson's candy store for some toffee before heading back to our car and heading home.

Marisolio is located at 488 Main Street, Murphys, CA.  Stop in and say hi to Sara.  And try the blueberry balsamic vinegar and the basil olive oil.  Both of those are next on my list.

  • I love the classic look of these simple Tiffany inspired sterling posts.  Whooweee.  Way cheaper too.
  • My life will not be complete until I have this hammock (and a lot of other stuff – but the hammock is a good start).
  • Sorry if you are on a diet.  That's all.  Sorry:  Bakers Royale
  • Our lilac season is so fleeting.  We got one bouquet because the hail and rain beat up our one and only lilac bush.  This is the second best thing to fresh lilacs.
  • Okay I'm biased since they are my little ladies but aren't they adorable.  That's Rick talking in the background and me sounding like Beevis.  Or is is Butthead?  Heh.  Heh heh.

Thank you

For keeping Evan in your thoughts.  Intellectually I know it is considered a routine procedure but when it comes to your child's heart is it ever routine?

Peeps in da house

Peeps

Busy weekend at the Blue Moon household.  We finally got our chicks.  I would like to introduce you to Scarlett, Rosita and Lucy; the Rhode Island reds (three chicks on the left) and Bellina, Ina and Grace; the Buff Cochins (on the right).

Bonus points if you know where the name Bellina came from.

I suppose now we are committed to building a coop.  These chicks are two weeks old and will probably be ready to go outdoors in about five weeks.  The weather will be warm by then, I hope.

I also finally got the 3-tiered planter planted.  Herbs on the bottom (basil, oregano, thyme, cilantro and chives) and geraniums, lobelia and allysum on the top two.  The liner on the bottom is looking a little wonky.  I didn't really notice it until I looked at the pictures.  Hopefully when the herbs fill in it won't be so noticable.

I don't normally do this but I do believe in the power of positive energy (whether it be prayer, vibes or just a caring thought).  So if you could throw some of that energy my son's way it would be dearly appreciated.  My youngest had open heart surgery when he was 18 and as a result had to have a permanent pacemaker implanted.  Today they discovered that one of the leads has cracked and needs to be replaced.  They are going replace the entire pacemaker when they go in.

His name is Evan and his worrywort mother thanks you.

I don't intend to turn this into a "Friday Favorites" only blog.  I'm just super duper swamped at work right now.  It's seriously cutting into my blog time.  Harrumph.

  • The funniest post I've read on the current blogger chicken craze:  Blackberry Creek Home Arts
  • One of the first Etsy purchases I made was from GetNoticed.  Adore these lovebird earrings
  • Great source for ribbons, trim, millinery supplies, and just general crafty stuff:  Caramelos
  • Hey did we know that Kaari Meng (French General) had a new book out?  I didn't.  French General: Treasured Notions
  • Pretty (!?) bottle opener from Urban Outfitters.  Might as well add a little beauty to task of opening a beer.

Happy Friday Everyone!!
