Under a Blue Moon

Decor, cooking, organization, all the pretty things

Happy Monday

Norman Rockwell Under a Blue Moon

In lieu of a regular post I thought I would share one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken.  Maybe my most favorite.  This was taken a couple of months after my 90 year old dad had broken his leg.

Let me back up.

My youngest son lives with my Dad.  It’s a brilliant arrangement.  My elderly father has someone to keep tabs on him and my son lives rent free in the overly expensive San Francisco bay area.  Win win.

Both of them have birthdays in November.  My son shares his with one of his best friends and every year they host a birthday camping trip.  This particular year (2015) my son managed to break his leg on their annual camping trip in a very remote location where he couldn’t be transported to a hospital until the next day.  I spent the entire day at the hospital while he underwent surgery to patch together his badly broken leg with screws and plates.

I didn’t leave the hospital until very late in the evening and rather than drive the two hours home I decided I would just stop at my Dad’s house and spend the night there.  When I arrived, just a few minutes shy of midnight, all the lights were on which I thought was odd. My Dad is a firm deliverer in an early bedtime.  I unlocked the front door and my dad’s voice came from the family room “Andrea – is that you?”  I ran into the family room and my dad was sitting on the floor, leaning on a chair.

He had fallen when trying to navigate the step up from the family room into the kitchen.  He managed to work himself into a sitting position and had been there for going on four hours before I arrived.  And I wasn’t even planning on stopping there.  He could have been there for days until someone had come along.  His chief companion and caregiver was in a hospital an hour away, recuperating from surgery.

I tried to help him up but it just wasn’t going to happen.  I called the fire department for a “lift assist” which is a service our local fire department provides when someone falls and can’t get up on their own.  When they arrived they weren’t sure that something else wasn’t amiss and wanted to send him on to the hospital.  So after spending the entire day at the hospital with my son I got in my car and followed an ambulance with my dad to the emergency room.

Diagnosis:  Broken leg.

Two broken legs in one day.

It all ends well but it was weeks of hospital and nursing homes.  Back and forth from the hospital my son was in and the nursing facility my dad was in.

The picture above was taken a couple of months after his accident where he just couldn’t bear his hair anymore.  I drove him to his barber so he could have a haircut.

Here is the best part of this story.  When we moved to California back in 1960 and my dad was the ripe old age of 35 he went to a barber in downtown Palo Alto and asked for a haircut.  He went to the same barber until he retired probably in the 1980’s.  The gentleman you see in the picture is the son of original barber.  My father has lived in Palo Alto for 59 years and has only had two barbers in that entire time frame.

After months of hospitals, nursing homes and sleepless nights it was just so lovely to have this moment of complete Norman Rockwell normality.  And that is the story of my son and my dad both breaking their legs a day apart.

  • If you love all things stationery this writing box will make you swoon
  • Victoria Magazine has come out with a 150th Anniversary edition of Little Women.  I can’t wait to see what other classics they publish
  • Speaking of Victoria Magazine – isn’t this white decor lovely?  It reads a little Christmasy because of the wreath and garland but remove those and that is the perfect January decor
  • Designer Josh Young’s home is gorgeous

I hope everyone has settled back into their normal routine without too much distress.  I’ve mostly been puttering around, organizing and planning my goals for the year.

We are in for a deliciously gloomy weekend.  The rain is schedule to start this evening and continue throughout the weekend.  Perfect weather to stay inside where it is all nice and cozy.

I think I’ll make a pot of some kind of cheesy vegetable soup and maybe I’ll drag out the old bread maker and make a loaf of bread for Rick.  That should smell wonderful.

I’m going over to my mother in law’s at some point this weekend to help her with general tidying and Christmas putting awaying.  That’s a word, right?  Awaying?  AnyWAY…She has been feeling poorly and not her usual energetic self so I volunteered to come over and help her sort a few things out.  Might as well take advantage of me being in a particularly organizing mood lately.

I hope you all have a splendid weekend!

Happy New Year

IMG_5667-2

Did you all have a nice New Year's?  We were hosting our two and half year old granddaughter and for the first time in forever I was asleep well before midnight.  Running after a toddler will do that to you.

After she left yesterday I started watching Marie Kondo's Netflix series.  Was that ever a mistake.  I spent the rest of the afternoon organizing my office and saying thank you, see you later to a bunch of stuff.  And that was only going through two drawers.

Along with the impromptu decluttering I also set up this year's bullet journal.  After I got laid off in September I just got out of the habit of setting up my weekly spreads.  I have really enjoyed the past few months being off work but the time has come to seriously look for work.  That task needs to be very organized and I think just having my week in general be more organized will help.

I updated my weekly spread since pre-layoff my journal was mostly used for work related tasks and events.

I also have a long term goal in regards to this blog.  I get a lot of pleasure out of the blog and I think it could be structured so much better and be more aesthetically pleasing while remaining authentic to who I am. I will be making the move to WordPress for starters and along with that I want to improve my photography and editing skills.   I would also like to launch an Etsy shop as a companion to the blog.

I'm going to break down this large goal in manageable chunks.  This first three months of this year will be dedicated to the WordPress migration and improving my photography skills and Etsy shop will come later in the year.  It would be so easy to be completely overwhelmed by the amount of work needed but by breaking it down and coming up with a system to track it I can really give it the focus required.

Okay – back to my desk drawers…

Clean Slate

It will be no surprise to anyone that has been following my blog for any length of time that I like to take my Christmas decorations down just about as much as I enjoy putting them up.  And I like it done immediately after Christmas.  Seriously – like the very next day.  This year I held out until the 27th only because I wasn't home on the 26th.

I start by rounding up all the non-tree related decor and put it all on the coffee table so I can assess the best way to pack it all back up.  Then I remove all tree decorations, wrap them up and put them in their proper storage boxes.  Then the trees get un-assembled and it all goes back into the shed.  Done and dusted.  Well except for the inevitable three of four things that I completely miss until mid January.

I wanted to change up the mantel a bit from how it was before Halloween when seasonal decor took over. I've had it the same way for ever, it seems.  I bought myself a new orchid and put it in a pretty green cache pot and pulled out some cream colored pitchers.

I like the soothing palette of cream and green.  And I do love a stack of books.  Whenever I go to an antique store I always look for books with white or cream bindings.  I rarely find them.

I can't believe it is the last day of the year.  Where did it go?  Whoosh!  My house is all tidy, we've done all our little New Year's eve rituals and we are going to spend a quiet evening at home.  I have a bottle of Prosecco chilling, a nice dinner planned and perhaps we'll light a fire and watch a movie.

IMG_5574

I want to end the year by saying thank you to all of you that come by and visit this humble little blog.  I truly appreciate you taking the time to read and comment and share a bit of yourselves as well.  In fact I like that part the best.  I wish you a very happy and fulfilling New Year.

Merry Christmas!

                        MerryChristmas

Merry Christmas Eve!  I have a cranberry almond Christmas cake in the oven, all my presents are wrapped (except one that I HOPE arrives today) and all my errands have been run.  All that is left to do is dinner preparations for our Christmas Eve dinner.  I make the same thing every year – phyllo wrapped chicken breasts, green beans and some kind of carby side (sweet potatoes this year).  We are going to my mother in law's later this afternoon.  She normally stays the night at our house on Christmas Eve but she isn't feeling up to the drive this year.

I am going to take the rest of the week off from blogging but I'll be back on New Year's Eve.  I hope you have a wonderful holiday!

  • I just discovered the singer LP and have been listening to her song “Lost On You” on repeat.  Such a unique voice and that whistle!

I don’t know about you but I have about eight bajillion gifts still to wrap.  I’m also still waiting for a few packages to arrive and have stocking stuffers to buy.  But the bulk of the preparations are done and hopefully I can relax.  I’m hoping to get the wrapping done today.  We shall see…

I’ve been thinking about goal setting this week.  With the new year looming I want to set some good intentions.  I’ve really taken advantage of, and completely enjoyed, being off work these past few months but in the new year I really need to focus on finding a job.  Or winning the lottery.  Either works for me.  I also want to refocus on my health.  I’ve kept the weight I lost off this year but I need to get more exercise and still lose another 15 pounds.

Next week, after Christmas is over, I may dedicate a post or two to how I want to approach the new year and what I hope it brings.

Have a fabulous weekend my friends – just remember to slow down and enjoy the season.

♡♡♡♡♡
