Under a Blue Moon

Decor, cooking, organization, all the pretty things

Little crafty project

Red_bottle

Whoa that’s a big, long picture.

So on my last day of vacation I finally felt the crafting urge come upon me.  I was inspired by a felt wine bottle giftbag I saw in Blueprint magazine.  It was so incredibly simple and so overpriced at $29. Seriously?  For a wine giftbag??

Theirs wasn’t even embellished.  Just plain grey felt.

So I hopped on over to JoAnns and bought a few quarter yard cuts of wool felt.  I bought red, brown and blue felt.  I cut a strip 6" x 30", cut a circle the diameter of a wine bottle about 3" down from one of the short sides (I think next time I will only go down about 2").  I folded it and zig-zag stritched around the three open sides, leaving about 1 1/2" open along the folded edge (to allow some give for the shape of the bottle).

Then I cut out the shape of a star and fused it to the front.  A handful of sparkles and I was done.  Not bad and it only cost me about $4 to make.

I think the red one turned out cuter than the brown one:

I was toying with the idea of adding a few escaping bubbles but in an uncharacteristic fit of rhinestone restraint I decided it didn’t need it.  It’s hard to tell in the pictures but the thread is constrasting (white on the red and blue bags and blue on the brown bag).

You could also trim the top (and sides, if you want) with pinking shears like I did on this blue one:

Now I need to go clean up the unbelievable mess I made.  Felt bits and rhinestones EVERYWHERE.

Before

Before

I am nearing the 75% mark of my time off from work.  I have accomplished exactly nothing.  I had high hopes of getting started on our new ‘built-in" shelves and cabinets in the living room but, alas,  it just isn’t meant to be.

This is the before shot and I’m hoping by posting here, publicly, that it will shame me into getting started on it.

So let me explain.  I own two bookcases that until now, because of their knotty pineness, have lived out in the garage where they held assorted B-list cookbooks (the ones not quite in favor at the moment), decorating books, old school books and the like.  Oh, and lots of cds.

I also have, courtesy of a husband in the kitchen design field, a rejected cabinet with two shelves, three doors and three drawers.  I also have four bun feet.   Gosh I love those picky customers that insist that a ding here or there necessitates the ordering of new cabinetry.  Guess who gets the rejects?

I feel like I need to back up a little bit.  Our house has a large living room, a separate dining room, a big kitchen with an equally big eating area, three bedrooms, three baths – but no family room.   The living room is actually called a ‘great room’ and is a good size (about 20×30 feet I think).

Here’s a crappy picture so you get the idea.  Disclaimer:  The place is still in a disarray due do the flooring in front of the sliding glass door on the left being replaced.  Normally you wouldn’t see the vacuum cleaner, pictures leaning up against walls and towels draped everywhere:

There are two seating areas; one in front of the large picture windows.  It consists of a large couch that faces the window, two bergere chairs and some tables.  The other seating area is by the fireplace and it consists of two identical loveseats that face each other and a coffee table.  It’s very cozy.

Here’s a picture taken looking the opposite direction.  Again, nothing is in place because of the flooring project.

Normally I don’t care for televisions in the living room but we don’t have a lot of options.   At the moment the television is housed in that 80’s oak monstrosity you see in the first picture (I really shouldn’t be so disparaging – just as soon as I hit post someone is going to email me and tell me they have the exact same entertainment unit).  We bought that  unit in 1988 and it has served us well.  It just doesn’t go exactly.

I’ve toyed with the idea of painting it white but when the free cabinet showed up in my life a new plan was hatched.  Rick is going to put the bun feet on the cabinet and I’m going to paint it, and the two bookcases my favorite creamy white.  The three pieces will butt right up to each other and, hopefully, the end result will look more cohesive and sort of built-in.

This is kind of the look I am going for (only in white):

This is from Pottery Barn.  And I realize my bookcases don’t have drawers and my cabinet will be a bit higher and have feet but I’m hoping the overall feel is the same.

Stay tuned.  Let’s see if I can get it done before Thanksgiving.

Halloween Party

Ozzie_252

You know how the day after Christmas you are just so totally OVER it.  I feel the same way about Halloween after we have our party.  It’s a shame, too – since Halloween hasn’t actually occurred yet.

So I’m not much in the mood to blog about it.  It was a spectacular party with lots of fun, food and great costumes.  Each year I am amazed at the ingenuity and effort that goes into all the costumes.

Ozzie_237

This is my cousin Joe, the Rocket Scientist (in real life, not his costume.  Obviously).  He called me during the week to see if there was a sewing machine he could borrow and I directed him to my sister Kate who graciously lent him her four billion dollar Bernina.   He sewed all those strips together.

We had muses (or were they sirens, I’m not sure), grim reaper, Speed Racer & Trixie, the milkman and his very pregnant customer, a corpse bride, two witches, a flapper, a sheriff, a nanny, a mime, a See’s candy lady, Princess Fiona, a penguin, two graduates, an 80’s Miami Vice type, a lion tamer and his lion, two Indian maidens, a doll, Medusa, Buffy and her slain vampire, a gold digger, a homeless person/anthropology major, a surfer dude, a kitty cat, Fred Flintstone, a deranged escaped convict, a sumo wrestler, a tourist, a dumpster and house undergoing remodeling (the next door neighbors in a sheepish, apologetic nod to the construction that has been going on at their house for the past four months).  I’m sure I’m leaving some out.

If you haven’t already,  check out Sara and Nicki’s blogs for more pictures.

Now let’s turn our attention to Thanksgiving which is EARLY this year.  November 22nd.  I love when Thanksgiving is early because it makes the whole Christmas season seem longer.

Halloween Party Eve

White_witch

I usually don’t post photos of myself on my blog unless my visage is pretty well obscured but here you go.  We are well into the preparations for tomorrow’s big Annual Halloween soiree.  This is me from last year – You can’t quite tell but I was a white witch.  Wearing my famous (well in my own little circle) white peignoir set.  I’ve managed to wear that same nightie and robe four or fives time at the Halloween party without ever repeating a costume.

Last year I bought the hat first and worked the rest of my costume around it.  This year is no different.  I’ll post pictures on Sunday or Monday (depending on how much brew is consumed at the party).

Sara and Nicki both have posts on their blogs with pictures of parties past.  We do quite enjoy the whole spectacle of getting dressed up in costume.  I really think Halloween is more for grown ups than it is for kids.

I better go pack up my car – last night I dreamt I made the 160 mile drive to my Dad’s house and realized I had forgotten my costume.  I had to go as myself.  Now THAT was scary.

Linens

Ozzie_212a

Today we went through my Mother’s closet.

1303 days ago my mother left us.  No matter how I try to phrase that it never sounds right.  She surely didn’t WANT to leave us; it certainly wasn’t deliberate – her family was everything to her – but leave us she did.   She was as complex a woman as I will ever meet.  I couldn’t even begin to describe her here and I won’t even try.

Until now we haven’t disturbed her things.  Some thought this was odd – an avoidance, if you will; but we saw no need.   Until now – nothing earth shattering – no one particularly needing the space her clothes took up – it was more an organizing exercise than anything else.

My sister Kate showed up and we started with my Father’s closet.  He was there to supervise and we had a fine afternoon of pulling out old suits from the 70’s and having the boys try them on for laughs.  We culled out the suits that were beyond repair and put them in one pile while the rest were deemed worthy to live on in someone (a tad svelter) else’s closet.

Nicki showed up just as we were moving on to our Mother’s things.  Hangers and hangers of beautiful jackets, slacks and shirts.  I never consciously noted that she always had a pin on her lapel but as we pulled out blazer after blazer – each one has a small, gold, circular pin on her lapel.  Each one so familiar.

We pulled out Argentine shawls, mother of the bride dresses – each one made by her favorite dressmaker, Inge.  Chambray, linen, silk – an entire wardrobe of textures – all in her favorite cool shades of blues, greens and greys.

She had a tendency to buy her clothes a size too large – either for comfort or for the notion she took up more space in the world than was totally accurate.

When we finished with her closet we moved on to her dresser drawers.  Layers of sheer cotton voile, lace and ribbon.   Here.  This is where I find myself. Where I find my mother.

Halloween Homage

Halloween

Halloween is getting closer!  I’ve decided on my costume for our annual Halloween party.  I can’t disclose it here until after the party because certain family members like the element of surprise.

I’m finally starting my much delayed vacation.  I have two solid weeks off from work and I am trying very hard not to check my work email.  It’s tough.  I hope the place doesn’t fall to pieces while I’m gone.

Today it’s off to the storage locker to pull out the Halloween decorations.  Time to get in the spirit of things.
