Under a Blue Moon

Decor, cooking, organization, all the pretty things

Happy Monday everyone.  I hope you all had a splendid weekend.  Mine was one of those delightful ones without any plans or direction.

I slept in like a teenager.  Made Flan (disaster).  Watched Mad Men.  Went out for dinner.  Went to a Home & Garden show.

Pretty much nothing productive happened.  Except cleaning out the chicken palace.  Going to the Home & Garden show was fun.  We actually had an agenda.  We wanted to talk to decking people, retaining wall people and fireplace people.

We have a beautiful fireplace in our bedroom that needs some attention.  We never use it because it smokes plus it has an unfinished look to it.  Since it is in our bedroom it is really just for ambiance.  It's a wood burning fireplace but has gas running to it to help start the fire.

What we want is to just put a fake log in there and put on a glass door to finish it off.  Every fireplace person we talked to launches into a fireplace insert, btu's, direct vent vs. natural vent, blah blah blah.   Blah to the tune of $2,000.00 or more.

We finally found a vendor that is conveniently located to us and when we told her what we were looking for she said "Well – that's easy.  You just need a log and door."

I'll save the decking and retaining wall discussions for another post or two.

Oh – we watched Ondine over the weekend too.  Filmed on the South-East coast of Ireland.  You feel like you are really there.  It's hard to explain the plot except that it is part fairy-tale, part gritty, realistic view of what it's like to be an Irish fisherman.   You never quite know what is real and what is fantasy in the movie.

  • Did you know that Betsey Johnson's Mexican beach compound is for sale?  Designed in her very colorful and unique style.  And not a bad price!
  • Sweet little Avon cameo on Etsy.  It's not a "real" cameo but it is so pretty.
  • I love the Isabella series by this artist on Etsy:  Isabella and the Bear and Isabella Takes Flight.
  • One of my readers alerted me to the PBS Series Downton Abbey.  Given my love of interiors and houses in movies she thought I would like the series.  Here is a blog post about the castle it is filmed in.  And you can watch the series (for a limited time) on the PBS website.  Thank you Lisa!

Happy Friday Everyone!  I have one of those blessed "nothing planned" weekends ahead of me.

I am sitting in the Sutter Hospital waiting room.  Nothing alarming.  Rick is having an MRI under anesthesia and I'm hanging out in the waiting room.

Why are all waiting rooms just so dismal?

I do thank them for the free WIFI.  So you get an up to the minute update on my life.  I know – try to contain yourself.

Rick is one of those eternally fit people.  He has been working out since he was in his early 20's.  He has had three knee surgeries, two wrist surgeries, elbow surgery and shoulder surgery.  This MRI is to check out his other shoulder.

I would say this is proof positive that working out doesn't pay off in the long run.  We might as well just sit on the coach and watch TV.

Well that's all I got.  Thanks for sitting here with me.

Update:  Diagnosis – torn rotator cuff.

We had a fabulous weekend.  We decided, rather spur of the moment, to go visit our friend Kath who lives in Lake Tahoe.

I'm not sure how people that live in vacation destinations do day to day life.  I mean seriously how do you get up and go to work?  I would just want to stretch leisurely when I woke up at 9:30am then go sit in my nightgown looking at the view while I sipped my morning tea.

Kath has an adorable cabin, nestled in the pine trees.  It is cozy and comfy and decorated in her eclectic style.  Kind of a shabby, beachy, Poconos mix that totally works.  When I come home from her house and look around my own I always think "well this is….staid and boring and safe."

So let's go back to the photo at the top.  Does anyone have any idea what that dish with the small hole in the lid is for?  The dish hasn't lost its handle or finial or anything like that.  There is a perfectly formed hole in the center of the lid that serves some purpose – but what?  I assume it is to vent steam or something but is there a name or special use for the dish itself?

She has a full 12-piece place setting set of Haviland Limoges china along with a very extensive collection of the serving pieces.  They were her Great Grandmother's passed down to her grandmother, to her mother and then to her.

The weather was perfect for us. We left mid-afternoon on Friday and arrived at her house just as the sun was setting.  We had a wonderful dinner and watched trashy TV.  On Saturday we got up to sparkly blue skies.  We took a drive around the lake and had lunch at a local pub.

I love impromptu get-aways like that.  My goal for 2011 is do something like that at least once a month.   When I look back at 2010 the best parts of it were the little trips like that we took.  Even the ones that were just an overnight stay somewhere.

  • Cute idea for all those mismatched teacups and saucers (give it a few seconds to load)

Thank you so much for all the feedback on Wednesday post.  It felt like a warm hug to me.  Things shall remain as haphazard as they have been with the exception of the new series on my Paris travels with my sisters.  And nieces.  And all their babies.

Happy Friday everyone!!

Hello.  Me here.

I have a question for you – what type of posts do you like the best?  While I'll never promise that this blog will have a clear focus (I'm a bit too scattered for that…) I would like to at least be entertaining and do posts on those topics that you find the most interesting.

Do you like the hodge-podgy aspect or would you prefer to see more craft, decorating (or scenes around my house), cooking, gardening or places of interest type posts?

Thank you for any and all input.

(Please note how I have artfully cut off the jowly part of my face.  I may have a new category coming soon – Andrea's Adventures with Cosmetic Surgery….)
