Under a Blue Moon

Decor, cooking, organization, all the pretty things

Wait? I have a blog?

I seemed to have forgotten I have a blog.  Sorry for the unexpected break.  I'm on a project that requires odd hours – I have to meet with my contempories in China (teleconferences, lest you think I'm in China) so I'm on calls from 5:00am until 7:00pm and I haven't been able to sort a schedule out of it all.

It also means I don't have time for anything fun or creative so what's there to blog about anyway?

My plans for this weekend are to finish the machine applique on the tabletopper and to start a silk ribbon embroidery sampler.   Maybe do some experimental baking.

Hopefully things will be a little more exciting around here next week.

22 years ago today

I was giving birth to this fine young man.   It's been 22 years of funny, irreverant, sweet, wackiness.   He is kind, responsible, unique (!), handsome and very much his own person.

Happy Birthday Sweetie!

Too soon?

Isn't that a pretty mercury glass type ornament?  I love the etching on it – I've never seen one like that before.  I picked it up at Elegant Clutter in Danville last weekend.  Only $5.95 too.

My first Christmas decoration purchase of the year!  I'm not counting the tiny little purchase I made last January because that was on After Christmas Clearance and clearly does not count.

See Nicki?  It is a silver tree, and not a pink one.  Honestly.  Pink?  I've come to the realization that when it comes to Christmas decoration I'm a silver, white and crystal person all the way.  No traditional red and green for me.   Oh – I'll make the occasional foray into gold but it just doesn't thrill me like the silver does.

We are going to be short changed on holiday decorating days since Thanksgiving is so late this year.  Unless some of us throw caution to the wind and actually start decorating BEFORE Thanksgiving.

Could happen.

I've been pouring over this issue of Somerset Studio.  So many creative and inpsiring projects in there.  That's probably why I'm in such a holiday mood.

Quilting

Picture 560a

I am back from crashing the quilt party.  More on the quilting in a bit.

One of my favorite things to do while in Danville is to go to Cottage Jewel, a little antique shop.  It's like walking into someone's home who collects all the things I love.  Beautiful old dishes and silver, linens and vintage hats.  Everything is clean and nicely displayed.  None of that old basement smell some antique shops have.

I bought a linen hand towel with crocheted lace on both ends.  I hope that whomever spent the time crocheting this knows that someone that really appreciates it has it now.

I got up early and packed up my car with my projects and my sewing machine and got to Danville around 9:00am.  Most ladies were already at work on their projects.

Here is Sara working on one of the eighty different projects she worked on during the day.  The girl is prolific.

Here's my project:  Acorn Quilt & Gift Company Meadow quilt pattern.  I adjusted it to be square so I could use it as a table topper.   Now I intially planned on hand appliquing the flowers on it (I fused the flowers on first) so I assembled the whole quilt.  If I had known I was going to change my mind  I would have machine appliqued the blocks before assembling.

My machine applique skills kind of suck but we'll just say we don't want it to look too polished, mkay?

Retreating

Picture 537

Tomorrow I'm crashing a quilting retreat at San Damiano in Danville.  A year and a half ago I attended one but unfortunately finances dictated that I pass on this one.

But my sister and niece talked me into coming up just for the day.  I have a couple of project I need to finish up with – I need to finish the machine applique on this project (scroll down a bit) and I want to get started on my my apron project.

I'm bringing a little thank you present to someone that was been very kind to me and whom I've never actually met in person.  I can hardly wait!

I'll also bring my camera and take pictures of all the creative projects being worked on.

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

The semi-political post

Picture 533a

What a day yesterday, no?  I feel such a sense of hope and optimism that has been sorely lacking around these parts.

Not everything went my way, particularly in the state measures area but one that did pass was prop. 2 – regarding the humane treatment of farm animals.  While this seems like a no brainer I can, in this uncertain economic time, understand why some people would oppose it, figuring it will most certainly affect their pocket book.

I would have voted yes no matter what but my decision was helped along by the fact that I'm hoping not to have to actually PAY for my eggs before too long.  Once Rick and I can come to an agreement on whether we want to get chicks or grown chickens to start out with.

Our chickens will have the most HUMANE living conditions.  They are going to live in a chicken palace, eat premium organic food, have a cat to torment and maybe we'll throw in regular massages and movie night once a week.

We found a lovely home for our goats – they are living on a 10-acre farm with other goats, llamas and a horse.  The man that took them says his in-laws have a little house on the property and the goats go visit them every day.

Now that the goats have moved out we can convert their home into the chicken palace.

Speaking of chickens look what Rick got for me.  It helps to leave broad hints in ones blog.  Sneaky guy ordered it and had it sitting on the mantel.   I must be sick of looking at that mantel because it took me half the day to even notice it and even then Rick had to TELL me that there was something new in the house.
