Under a Blue Moon

Decor, cooking, organization, all the pretty things

Happy Thanksgiving!

Crouch Family Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  I hope your celebration is crowded elbows, children’s table, just enough room for pumpkin pie and very full bellies and hearts.

I am going to spend the day making stuffing, green bean casserole and buttermilk pies.

See you on Friday!

White and Gold Thanksgiving Table

We always do Thanksgiving at my Dad’s house and I’m in charge of setting/decorating the table.  I like to do a test run at home a few days before.  I tend to go with a natural/neutral theme and this year I’m staying with that but glamming it up a bit with gold and brass.  I love the combination.  I think the white pumpkins keep if from reading too Christmasy.

I wish I had picked up more of those small white pumpkins.  My dad’s table is loooong and I want to stretch out the centerpiece a bit but I can’t find the pumpkins anymore.  I really like how they look with the doilies on top of them.  I did have to cut a hole in the center of each one but I’ll save them for next year.  I just put a little fray check on the cut ends so hopefully they won’t unravel.

Here is last year’s rehearsal (which I didn’t actually do at my Dad’s) and the actual table.

In other news this post is late this morning because my new HP laptop (less than six months old) is giving me fits.  It has developed a really alarming noise.  I spent about an hour with the tech people while they updated things to no avail.  It still runs, although it seems slow to me, but the noise is really distracting and can’t be a good thing.  It can either be attributed to the fan or hard drive.  I have a great back up service so if worse comes to worse and it is the hard drive at least all my files are backed up.  They are going to send me a box to ship it to them for further diagnostics.  Posting may be sporadic over the next couple of weeks.

  • Holy smokes.  I need to move out of California and rescue a house
  • This is just about the prettiest bottle of tequila I’ve ever seen.  Okay it is the prettiest…
  • Keeping with the alcohol theme…this would be the perfect addition to a relaxing bath.  Or your daily shower haha!
  • Gorgeous architectural details in the Brooklyn studio apartment.  The sleeping loft gives me claustrophobia though.  At the very least just put the mattress on the floor

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is next week?  Where on earth did the year go??  I do like when Thanksgiving is early because then there is more time until Christmas to enjoy your decorations and to get your shopping done.

I spent the week watching our granddaughter and it is always a delight but goodness does it wear me out!  She is such a lovely little human being.  So sweet and cuddly right now.

We have a family engagement party on Saturday.  The theme is Falling in Love.  I’m going to go over early and help my niece and her fiance (and my brother in law) set up.  I whipped up some plaid table toppers to go over the cream table cloths and we have a fun photo backdrop planned.

I hope you all have a splendid weekend planned!

Book Report

Mantel3-2

I seem to space these reviews about every five or six months.  I am just reviewing the books I liked and per usual I actually listen to audio books so I'll rate the narrator as well.  And surprise surprise – there are no Louise Penny books on the list this time.  I took a break after the ninth book in the Three Pines series.  Mainly because there is only one more narrated by Ralph Cosham and I'm not ready to give him up just yet.

Let's get on with it, shall we?

EleanorOliphantEleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine:  A Novel by Gail Honeyman, narrated by Cathleen McCarron:  Eleanor Oliphant actually isn't fine.  She is blunt and completely lacking in social skills.  She leads a very isolated and regimented life that precludes any type of social interaction.  She goes to her mundane job and does her work efficiently without any hope or ambition of advancing her career and spends her weekends eating frozen pizza and polishing off a bottle or two of vodka.   The weekend always includes a phone call with "Mummy," a woman with whom she has a very complicated, unhealthy relationship.  A couple of things happen to shake up Eleanor's carefully isolating routine; she develops a mad crush on a musician she saw in a rare work related outing which prompts to her go on a self improvement campaign in order to win him over, and the hiring of Raymond in the IT department who looks past all her brusqueness and weird mannerisms.  The book is really about the importance of human connections and overcoming a horrific past.   She is tragic and seemingly unlikable but you become invested in her almost immediately and find yourself rooting for her.  The writing is fabulous in how Eleanor's backstory is slowly revealed and you begin to understand why she is the way she is.  And gosh I'm making it sound completely dour but Eleanor is unintentionally hilarious in her dealings with people and situations so it is simultaneously a heartbreaking and very funny read.  Cathleen McCarron perfectly captured both the brilliance and social ineptness of Eleanor.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

HeftHeft by Liz Moore, narrated by Kirby Heyborne and Keith Szarabajka:  This novel is similar to the one above in that is the story about a social misfit and the poignant way he slowly forges a series of friendships.  Arthur Opp, the reclusive and obese professor who has not left his home in over a decade and Kel Keller, the son of a former student that enchanted Arthur many years ago come together when Kel's mother contacts Arthur after two decades of silence to ask for his help.  The story is told in alternating views, first Arthur Opp's and then Kel's.  You know right away that they are on a trajectory to meet but the author does a fabulous job of building their individual stories.  The character development is beautifully done and even satellite characters are developed nicely and you become invested in everyone in the book.  So again a story of loneliness and forging your own make-shift family.  Narration was great, especially Keith Szarabajka's intrepretation of the distinguished and dignified Arthur Opp.   ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

TheGirlWhoDranktheMoonThe Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill, narrated by Christina Moore:  This is a Young Adult fiction which I like to throw into my library on occasion as a palate cleanser of sorts.  The story is of the people of the Protectorate who leave a baby every year as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town.  And every year the witch, Xan, has to go rescue the poor child.  She takes the babies to the other side of the forest and delivers them to welcoming families there.  Along the journey she feeds them starlight but one year she mistakenly feeds a baby girl moonlight which gives her incredible magical powers.  She decides to keep this baby and raise it on her own.   Luna, as the baby is named, is raised with Xan's friends Glerk, the swamp monster and resident poet, and Fyrian, a teeny dragon.   Meanwhile, back at the Protectorate not all is as it seems.   It seems there is more evil there than in the forest.  Very much a fairy tale sort of a book.  Amazon says it is for 4-6 grade readers but I thought there were some pretty dark situations.  It is beautifully written and the language and wording used seems more geared to an older audience and not "dumbed" down to a 4th grade level.  Narration was excellent.  If fact I don't think I would have liked it as much if I had read it myself.  The narration definitely adds depth to the story.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

AYearofMarvellousWaysA Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman, narrated by the author:  This gets the best title award.  Marvellous Ways is a ninety year old woman living on a remove creek in 1947 Cornwall.  Hmm.  All the books I've read recently have a main character that lives in isolation.  Wonder what is up with that.  The story has a bit of a mystical bent to it.  It begins with Marvellous Ways waiting for something, but what that something is she isn't sure.  It turns out to the a soldier, returning from the war, that is broken in both body and spirit.  Marvellous tends to him and brings him back to health.  This is a hard one to describe.  The writing is so absolutely beautiful that I would at times get a lost in the words and not quite get the story and would have to go back and re-listen.  The author does a wonderful job of weaving the past and the present and capturing the lives of the main characters.  There are some rather unflinching descriptions of the war that were hard to read/listen to but they do serve to underscore the how and why of the soldier washing up on Marvellous' creek.  Towards the end I wished the story had tightened up a bit.  It seemed to drag in spots.  To sum it up it was one of those books where I would be thinking about certain passages long after I read them but not the story itself.  Narration, always dicey when done by the author, was fabulous.  It really was her story to tell – I don't think anyone else would have done her words justice. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Let me know what you are currently reading and if you recommend anything.  Has anyone read Barbara Kingsolver's latest:  Unsheltered?  The reviews look good and she is a reliable author so I might give that one a go next.

Spice Drawer

IMG_5197-2

Since I have time on my hands these days I've been looking for little projects to do around the house.  One of the things that has been bugging me is the state of my spice drawer.

Brace yourself.

IMG_5184

What a hot mess.  I've been looking for squat jars that I could transfer my spices to and I came across 4 oz. quilted Ball caning jars.  The drawback to them is the two piece lid.  I didn't want to have to monkey with that every time I opened a spice jar.  Well Ball to the rescue again.  They have plain white lids that fit all their standard mouth jars.

A note on prices – in store the lids were only $3.99 for a box of eight.  I'm not sure why they are almost twice as much online.

I took inventory and then printed off labels for each type of spice or seasoning I have.  I added a red band because I like the kind of retro vibe it has.  I used the Traveling Typewriter font.

The labels are from Avery and their website has templates where you can type in whatever you want and add graphics if you want and then print them off.  The only down side is their fonts are limited so I used the website to add the red band and then downloaded the MS Word template (also from their website) and used Word to add the text.  For some reason I couldn't add the red band in Word because it kept messing up the placement of my text.  I just printed the labels using their online template first to get the red band, then ran it through the printer again using the MS Word template to add the text.

Doesn't that look so much better?  I didn't get enough jars for all my spices (who knew I had so many?) but I had a number of half jars and I just slapped the label on the lids of those.  If I ever decide to get more of the Ball jars I can fit twelve more jars in the drawer.

The entire project took about 45 minutes and cost less than $30.

  • Two pretty Instagram feeds:  @vintage_beautyvb and @vintagecrushin.  Both have that shabby, neutral vibe I like.
  • I have this shirt from Old Navy in white plaid and it is so comfy and flattering.  It is incredibly soft.  It reminds me of the ridiculously overpriced Rails plaid shirts at a fraction of the cost.
  • I featured Chrissy McDonald's (of Harlowe James) Halloween decor.  Here is a tour of her Sausalito apartment.  I love her aesthetic.  So calm and inviting (The link doesn't seem to work but the url is theeverygirl.com/chrissy-mcdonald-home-tour/ ).
  • Ravel's Bolero.  Remember (if you in my age bracket) when the movie 10 made it so popular?  This is so much nicer.  Fact about me:  I used to play the clarinet.  All through junior high and high school.  This makes me wish I kept it up.

Happy Friday!  Goodness it got chilly here all of the sudden.  And by chilly I mean in the low 70s.  Although, as I type, it is currently 46 degrees.  I'm ready to change out our bedding with something a little cozier.

We have a low key weekend planned.  My sister is visiting from Wisconsin (she is staying at my father's house) and we are going to celebrate her birthday on Sunday.  She's here for a nice long visit.

As for me – I'm off to get my haircut and something done about all the sparklies, ahem, at the roots.  Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
